This fidalgo was the son of Brás Afonso Correia, corregedor [magistrate] of Lisbon. In 1513, he set off to India as captain of a fleet. However, his journey ended badly. The Portuguese historian João de Barros tells that his carrack ship wrecked on the sand-banks of St. Lazarus [an island in Mozambique]. However, most of the crew members, including its captain, did reach the coast of Melinde, on a raft. Francisco Correia ended up dying there, when he was being transferred to Henrique Nunes de Leãos vessel. |
