In 1506 he went to India as captain of Tristão da Cunha´s fleet. The information about this knight of the Royal House is unclear. Fernão Lopes de Castanheda states that he is originally from Sintra and the brother of a Gaspar Gonçalves, while João de Barros states that he is a ?Knight from Alvito.? He commanded a ship of boat owners from Lagos. He died prior to reaching Mozambique.
