Anthroponyms seta MAGALHÃES, Pêro Barreto (?-1509)

He was the son of Gil de Magalhães and brother of António de Magalhães, who left with him in the Pêro de Anhaia fleet in 1505. According to Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, this nobleman of the Royal House served in the north of Africa, for ?some called him the lion due to the one he killed in Africa?. Once arrived at the Indian Ocean, he became the commodore of the Sofala carrack ships. He served during the reign of viceroy Dom Francisco and died at ?Aguada de Saldanha? in 1509. Since 1496 he was referred to as being a knight of the Order of Santiago.
