Anthroponyms seta CARVALHAL, Jorge (1546-1592)

Clergy of the Society of Jesus who worked mostly in Japan. He was born in Viseu, around 1546, and died in Ikitsuki on 5th May, 1592. He entered the Society on 14th May, 1567. Shortly after he was ordained priest, he sailed to India, on 24th March, 1578, where he was a novice master. Later, he went on to the Far East and reached Japan on 25th July, 1583; he started by working in Bungo, namely at the Myôken residence, and then moved on to the Hirado area. He died suddenly, as consequence of an illness that lasted only eight days, and suspicions of having been poisoned were raised, as had happened with José Fornaleti, who was with Carvalhal in Hirado, and with Francisco Carreón.
