Captain and manager of a ship in the fleet commanded by Lançarote de Lagos, sent in 1444 to the coast of Arguin. In 1445, he again captained and armed a ship in the fleet under the command of Lançarote de Lagos. According to Zurara, a Portuguese chronicler, when the commodore, ordered by Prince Henry the Navigator allowed the captains to choose if they wanted to return to the Kingdom or continue the voyage, João Dias decided to return to Portugal using as justification the bad conditions of his ship and the winter's arrival.
