He went to Índia in 1505 as captain of Dom Francisco de Almeida´s fleet. He was the son of Cristovão Bermudez, who sided with the Beltraneja (Princess Joana) and, after the victory of Isabel, the Catholic, was forced to seek refuge in Portugal. This knight of Castillian origin along with his wife, Dona Isabel de Ataíde, received the protection of the Excelente Senhora (as the Beltraneja was known in Portugal). In 1490, he was a member of King João II´s guard. He was the father of Cristovão Bermudez, who traveled with him to the Orient, and was related to Diogo Bermudez Guadalajara, who was Chief-Alcaide of Cannanore.
