He went to India as captain of the fleet in 1516. He was the son of Pero Lopes da Costa de Tomar, and brother of the "veteran," Afonso Lopes da Costa, as well as of António Lopes, captain of the fleet that was involved in the conquest of Goa in 1510. In 1520, he was captain of the "upper castle" of Cochim.
