This gentleman was the son of Afonso Teles Barreto and of Germineza Pereira, daughter of Henrique Moniz Barreto, the Elder, chief alcaide of Silves. In 1504 he left for India as captain of the fleet of Lopo Soares de Albergaria; although Barreto had been appointed captain of the fleet in charge of watching the coast of Kochi, he made the return voyage in the company of Soares de Albergaria. In 1506 he returned to India as captain of the fleet of Afonso de Albuquerque and took part in the Ormuz expedition lead by the Sea Lion - one of the cognomens given to Albuquerque. Nevertheless, in the company of Afonso Lopes da Costa and António do Campo, he abandoned the future governor and turned to the «presas» business (a kind of privateering). He would die with the viceroy Dom Francisco de Almeida at "Aguada de Saldanha".
