This nobleman of the Royal House was the son of Álvaro de Carvalho, lord of the Majorat of Carvalho and of Canas de Senhorim, and of Dona Isabel Soares, illegitimate daughter of Fernão Soares de Albergaria. In 1489, he was frontier in Arzila. In 1504, he set off to India as captain of Lopo Soares de Albergaria's fleet and in 1508 he occupied that exact same post in Jorge de Aguiar's fleet. During this year of 1508 he was described as the ship manager of the carrack ship of which he was the captain. For this reason he returned to the kingdom soon after, in 1509, with a cargo of spices.
