Clergy of the Society of Jesus who worked mostly in Japan. Born in 1526 in Cordova, he died in Hirado on 26 June, 1567. He joined the Society on 19 May, 1547. He departed for India in 1548 and, after that, accompanied Francis Xavier on his pioneering trip to Japan. He worked in Japan from 15 August, 1549 until his death. He was well versed in the Japanese language and was the first European to author a Japanese grammar and vocabulary. Most prominent among his works are the Japanese commentaries on the Four Gospels, the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and the Sunday prayers. In 1565, on the Island of Takushima, these works were lost in a fire.
