He was Prince Dom Henrique's squire. He belonged to the crew of the caravel captained by Nuno Tristão heading to the western coast of Africa in 1446. He witnessed the death of the captain when he was killed in a fight with the natives. André Dias returned to the kingdom in a caravel captained by Aires Tinoco.
