This nobleman of the Royal House was the illegitimate son of Dom Pedro de Eça, Chief-Alcaide of Moura. In 1512 he went to India as captain of the fleet. Before departing to the Orient, he was governor of Tangier. In 1512 he participated in the attack to the Palace of Benasterim and, later on, Adem. In 1515, he performed the duties of captain of Goa and was replaced shortly after by Dom Guterre de Monroy. In 1518, he is mentioned as member of the Royal Council. In 1535, another Dom João de Eça went to the Orient, a homonym.
