This nobleman of the Royal House was the son of Dom Gonçalo Coutinho, 2nd Count of Marialva, and of Dona Beatriz de Melo. He was the brother of Dom Francisco, heir to the title of Marialva. In 1502, he left for India as a Fleet Captain. On June the 8th, 1509, he received the habit of Santiago. However, in 1514, he was transferred to the Order of Christ. By 1518, he is referred to as member of the Council of the Kingdom.
