Rightful heir of Dom Francisco de Melo, second Marquis of Ferreira as well as Count of Tentúgal, and of Dona Eugénia, daughter of the fourth Duke of Braganza, Dom Jaime.
Having married Dona Catarina de Eça, daughter of Dom Afonso de Noronha, who was Knight Harbinger of King João III and Viceroy in India, he became a widower in 1573. He took part in the battle of Alcácer Quibir and consequently died on August the 4th, 1578, due to injuries caused by a firearm.
