Francisco Nogueira

This nobleman of the Royal House was the son of Afonso Nogueira de Brito and Isabel Jaques, daughter of Diogo Jaques de Lagos. He was a first cousin of many of the Britos who were in India during the reign of Dom Manuel I. In 1507 and 1508, he received an annual pension of fifteen thousand reis taken from the proceeds of Lisbon taxes. He was married to Catarina de Azevedo, who received two hundred and fourty bushels of wheat, a benefit granted by the crown, to be paid by the overseer of the Royal Territory of Oeiras. In 1512 he left for India as captain of the fleet. He was accompanied by two of his sons: the firstborn, Afonso Nogueira, and the youngest, Gomes Nogueira. His adventure in the Orient began with misfortune, as his ship sank in Angoxa, but the crew was saved. Once in India, Afonso de Albuquerque assigned him to the peace process with Calicut, where the Portuguese would build a fortress, and he would become its first captain. He was replaced by Alvaro Teles, who arrived in India in 1515. He is mentioned in the 1518 records as member of the Royal Council.
