He probably was a Genoese navigator who came to Portugal following the treaty signed in 1317 by King Dinis and Manuel de Pessanha. He was supposed to captain the royal galleys and fight privateers, and was given permission to privateer and do commerce himself. Before 1336 he must have temporarily occupied one of the Canary Islands, more precisely the one that was named after him, where he built a fort. In Angelino Dulcert's Portolan chart, dating of 1336, it was already possible to recognize the island of Lanzarote, where the Genoese coat of arms and the name of its discoverer were quite legible.
