Left for the East as captain of the fleet of Gonçalo de Sequeira in 1510. Historians say that he was the nephew of Tomás Lopes, factor of the Casa da Índia. It must have been by influence of this uncle that he was appointed captain of a ship, most probably of a carrack of the spices' expedition.
